Improved Search Engine Optimization - Modifications Made

January 17, 2014
With our January software update two small but significant changes were made in the title tag of the public module pages that are bound to improve search engine rankings for both you and your member.

Switching order of terms in the ChamberMaster/MemberZone public module page title tag

For SEO the first words in the page title are the most important – historically we have appended page specific details onto the end of the existing page title from the template; this change allows the page specific information to appear first as opposed to the generic content that we take from the template page’s title tag.

Additionally the page title tag is often what shows in Google’s Search results for a page and it is what is displayed in the browser tab – changing the order helps ensure that a user knows that the page contains the information for which they are searching.

Automatic removal of irrelevant page title information – e.g. “template”, “ChamberMaster”, “MemberZone”

The Chambermaster/MemberZone system typically uses a page from within a client’s website to wrap around the module content to provide a consistent look/feel with their main website.  We often see that a web designer has named the template page in a way that does not look good in search results and may even prove unhelpful to users and search engines.  While it makes sense to name the template page in a way that ensures easy identification (e.g. “ChamberMaster Template”,  “MemberZone Template”, “Template”, etc… – the result is that those titles are carried through to the search results and browser tabs.  This update will automatically locate and eliminate specific words from the title tag that provide no additional value or search engines or users.

One example – appearance in Google search results of a Template with a Title tag that reads “ChamberMaster Template – Green Valley Chamber of Commerce”:

While subtle, both of these changes will have a significant impact on the search engine value of the public module pages.
